The German Ultramarathon Foundation (DUV) was established on December 22nd, 1985 in Rodenbach in the Main-Kinzig-District by 22 pioneers of ultramarathon running.
Today, the DUV with its over 1,600 members, has become the world’s most important ultramarathon organising body.
We consider ourselves as representatives of the interests of ultramarathon runners as well as the expert organising body of ultra running in Germany. Our aim is to promote and to service ultramarathon running, that is, events going beyond the regular marathon distance, as is laid down in the charter of our foundation.
We have achieved many goals:
- Initiation of official 100k German Championships in 1987, since 1991 also including official veterans’ championships
- Initiation of keeping of official DLV (German Athletics Foundation) ranking lists for 100k and 24 hours
- Introduction and annual staging of “International German ultramarathon championships of the DUV” for 24 hours, 50k and for ultramarathon cross-country running
- Establishment of rules and regulations for the championships mentioned above as well as keeping DUV ranking lists of championships and best performances
- Regular publication of the printed organ of the DUV, “Ultra-Marathon”, which includes news and articles of the latest events, reports and a calendar of forthcoming races as well as results of ultramarathons. “Ultra-Marathon” is published four times a year, comprising around 100 pages per issue
- Regular publication of the “Statistik-Jahrbuch” (annual compilation of statistics of ultramarathon races)
However, there is still a lot to be done. One of our primary goals has been to achieve an official status for the 24 hours championships so that the athletes of this discipline will be treated with the respect and recognition they deserve and in order to raise the attractiveness of ultramarathon running as such.
Our sport is subject to changes, the athletes’ needs are diverse and expanding.
Being active ultramarathon runners ourselves, we constantly analyse the field of ultramarathon running and develop progressive concepts which include feedback and ideas from our members.
All of those who can cover more than the marathon distance belong to us, because:
